Persium Case Study
Monitoring air quality across urban, kerbside, and background environments in Kenya.
Project Summary
Persium Pods have been deployed across multiple locations in Kenya, capturing high-resolution air quality data across urban areas, kerbside environments influenced by traffic activity, and background sites that provide a regional baseline.
This distributed approach allows researchers and policymakers to compare pollution patterns across environments and better understand how emission sources, traffic behaviour, and atmospheric conditions shape air quality. All data streams into Persium MapView and the Persium Dashboard for live monitoring, trend analysis, and downloadable reporting.
The Challenge
Air quality exposure varies significantly depending on location. Urban centres, roadside corridors, and background environments often experience very different pollution dynamics, shaped by traffic behaviour, local emission sources, and atmospheric conditions.
Understanding these variations requires monitoring that reflects how air quality actually behaves across real-world environments, not just at a single reference station.
Persium Deployment
Persium Pods are deployed across three types of location in Kenya: urban centres, kerbside environments and background monitoring sites. Together, they form a distributed network that captures how conditions differ between these environments.
Each Pod streams data continuously into the Persium platform, with configuration tailored to each deployment location.
Pollutants Measured
Air Quality: NO₂, NO, O₃, SO₂, CO, CO₂, CH₄, PM1, PM2.5, PM10, NH₃, H₂S, CH₃SH, VOCs
Atmospherics: Temperature, Pressure, Humidity, Dew Point, Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Wind Chill, Heat Index, WBGT, Thermal Work Limit, Solar Irradiance, Noise, Max Noise
The Persium Pod is fully configurable to match your monitoring needs. Select from a comprehensive range of air quality and atmospheric parameters to suit your environment, industry and regulatory requirements.
Monitoring through Dashboard & MapView
All monitoring data feeds into the Persium Dashboard and MapView, providing a live, interactive view of every sensor in the network.
Users can visualise environmental conditions, analyse pollution trends, identify potential hotspots, configure threshold alerts and download CSV reports. Access is secure and encrypted, with no limit on the number of dashboard users.
What This Enables
Distributed, hyperlocal monitoring across Kenya provides deeper insight into pollution dynamics and real-world exposure, supporting environmental research, urban planning evidence, and policy development. The deployment reflects Persium's growing presence across Africa and the increasing need for real-time environmental intelligence to help build healthier, more breathable communities.
