Designed for continuous outdoor deployment across real-world environments.

RECAP

Project Summary

Persium deployed a real-time air quality monitoring network in Southwark spanning the River Thames and surrounding residential streets.

Persium Pods positioned along the riverfront and across the borough capture how vessel emissions from the Thames interact with urban air quality, providing continuous, hyperlocal data that connects river transport to community-level exposure. All data streams into Persium MapView for live geospatial visualisation, source attribution, and reporting.

The Challenge

River vessel emissions are often less monitored than road traffic, yet the Thames is a major and busy transport corridor. Emissions from boat activity do not stay on the water, they disperse into surrounding streets, residential neighbourhoods, and public spaces.

Without continuous, spatially distributed monitoring across both the river and the borough, it is difficult to understand how vessel activity shapes the air quality that residents experience.

Persium
Deployment

Persium Pods are deployed along the River Thames and across Southwark's streets and residential areas, creating a connected monitoring network that spans the full exposure pathway from river to community.

Parameters monitored include key pollutants such as NO₂, O₃, CO, SO₂, PM0.3, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, alongside noise, wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, pressure, and atmospheric conditions.

Monitoring through Dashboard & MapView

All data streams into Persium MapView, integrating air quality monitoring with vessel movement data and local wind readings to support source attribution. Users can monitor pollutant trends in real time, compare river and street-level data, configure alerts, and generate downloadable reports.

What This Enables

Continuous monitoring across river and street environments gives stakeholders a system-level understanding of urban exposure, enabling evidence-based decisions on vessel scheduling, clean fuel incentives, emission standards, and electric boat adoption. Environmental data becomes dynamic, spatial, and actionable rather than static or isolated.

Every waterway has an environmental story. Persium helps you read it.
